Heads up Eurovision Fans, we're about to get a brand new competition! Dubbed the American Song Contest, the EBU has decided to take its unique brand of singing competition to the United States.
All 50 US States will partake in up to 10 qualifying rounds, followed by a semi-final and prime-time grand final. The competition is set to debut during the holiday season of 2021.
Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest Martin Österdahl said in a statement:
“The Eurovision Song Contest’s unique legacy dates back 65 years and its worldwide popularity is still rising. It’s time for America to experience this spectacle, through its sister competition, the American Song Contest. Love of music is universal and celebration of music in different genres and styles can transcend boundaries and unite people. We are excited to have found the right partners to offer another series that our fans across the globe can fall in love with and to share this unique competition with the American people.”
There's some creative talent behind the competition, and the organisers are encouraging artists of all stripes to participate - whether they're signed acts or amateur singers.
Expect a slightly less crazy competition however... we're not sure what the American people would make of Verka...
